Are You a Leader? Drew Dudley – Everyday Leadership Bigger than life Unattainable “Lollipop Moments” Invisible Leadership Moments

Have You Had a Lollipop Moment?

Leadership Qualities Have a vision Build team support Accept accountability Make decisions and take action Lead by example Seek partners

Vision A leader will… Reflect on the past Set goals for the future Plan how to get there Own It To build a career… Learn from past experiences Determine where you want to go Attitude is Everything!! Payroll leader – Year End what you want in life what you are willing to put into it Reflection – What do you want and where do you want to go. For me – I always have something I am striving for or that I want to learn next. Goals – Knowing where you want to go will drive your goals. Attitude is everything. It will also drive your career. Your attitude will drive whether you have a job or a career. What people remember about me – is my passion. I love what I do. I love payroll and I love being a part of the APA and an organization that exists to support US and to ensure we have the education and resources to have the payroll career that we want and deserve.

Accept Accountability A leader will… Take ownership Commit Follow through To build a career… Take ownership of your education Prioritize No one to blame but yourself Stay grounded what you want in life what you are willing to put into it With any strong and stable structure you must have a strong foundation. Education is critical and never-ending. Knowledge is power. You don’t know everything and you never will. I don’t care how long you have been in payroll – you have something to learn. And you have something to give to others that are new to payroll. If you think you do know everything, then you need to be the one teaching others. CPP – they know where to go to get the answers and they usually have a wider network of resources CPP exam X 4 – cost of my nails Hair – TPC registration Starbucks Cable TV

you have stopped living. If you are not reading, you are not learning. If you are not learning, you are not growing. If you are not growing, you have stopped living. what you want in life what you are willing to put into it With any strong and stable structure you must have a strong foundation. Education is critical and never-ending. You don’t know everything and you never will. I don’t care how long you have been in payroll – you have something to learn. And you have something to give to others that are new to payroll. If you think you do know everything, then you need to be the one teaching others. CPP – they know where to go to get the answers and they usually have a wider network of resources

Make Decisions & Lead by Example A leader will… Be Decisive Take Action Take the Initiative Take Risks Act with Integrity To build a career… Move outside your comfort zone If you are comfortable – make a change Make a decision and go for it! Risks – Tax position Payroll Manager interview Legal Leaving Brinker Leaving SW Going with global – no experience I want a large house – with different rooms. Your career needs to have different experiences – to be well rounded. Employers want professionals with diverse backgrounds. Integrity – when you do the right thing even when no one is looking.

Seek Partners A leader will… Network Seek advice and support Volunteer Build expertise Open doors Increase visability Mentor To build a career… Leverage your connections Join your professional organization Be ACTIVE in the organization It may help you more than the others you are helping You are still in control of what you volunteer for – but it’s a commitment. Its hard to fire a volunteer, but sometimes its needed. Don’t put yourself in that position. Increase your visability

Build Support A leader will… Build rapport Communicate openly Be an active listener Gain team support To build a career… Who is your support team? Success dependent upon buy-in Open communication what you want in life what you are willing to put into it Reflection – What do you want and where do you want to go. For me – I always have something I am striving for or that I want to learn next. Ex: Currently – it is global payroll. SAP is still on my radar.

What’s Missing? MY VISION SUPPORT GLOBAL NETWORK I LEAD BY EXAMPLE I AM A RISK TAKER I OWN MY EDUCATION! What’s Missing?

Wherever you are in life with whatever you’re doing – you’re going to be ahead of some and behind others. That’s okay. Own where you are. Take time to embrace and celebrate that. Continue moving forward. And never compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. Kathy’s story – what are you going to do about it. Don’t like something at work? What are you going to do about it? Don’t like something about the chapter? What are you going to do about it? Don’t like something about National? What are you going to do about it? Lifewithoutpants.com

Leaders With Careers Will… Stay current in their field Stay active in professional organizations Engage in (social) networking Review goals frequently Recognize their supporters Stay current – even if you leave the payroll world (Payroll – Legal / Domestic - Global) If I were retired – I would still stay active Are you Linked In? Home / life balance will impact goals
