Primary Source Analysis 1) What is this quote talking about? 2) What does it tell us about this era? If it had not been for these things, I might have lived out my life talking at street corners to scorning men. I might have died, unmarked, unknown, a failure. Now we are not a failure. This is our career and our triumph. Never in our full life could we hope to do such work for tolerance, for justice, for man's understanding of man as now we do by accident. Our words — our lives — our pains — nothing! The taking of our lives — lives of a good shoemaker and a poor fish-peddler — all! That last moment belongs to us — that agony is our triumph. Nicola Vanzetti - 1927

The 1920s in America – Racism and Prejudice Chapter 8 Lesson 1

What was the Red Scare? Since 1800s Americans accused foreigners of bringing communist ideas to America Russian Revolution fueled the idea that the “Reds” were trying to take over America Workers and strikes seen as the first step

Where did this come from? 1917 Russian Revolution /Communist take over Russia ***Palmer Raids ***– Postal Service Bombs led to forced deportation and FBI ***Americans began to give up their civil liberties (freedoms) in response***

In Your Groups How do you think the Red Scare affected immigrants? Does this relate to anything we have been covering? What? How?

What is Nativism? (Reminder Slide) A belief that one’s country needs to be protected against immigrants Includes an extreme dislike or hatred of immigrants

Why did Nativism Strengthen after WWI? During and after WWI Americans became prejudice against all immigrants Immigrants were blamed for many problems in society (unemployment, strikes, recession)

Think – Pair – Share Do we still have Nativism today? Try to think of ways our government and people have Nativism in America today. Who is discriminated against? Why do you think it happens? Do you think any of it is valid? Why or why not?

Who were Sacco and Vanzetti? Famous murder trial 2 men robbed and murdered 2 employees at a shoe factory 2 Italian immigrants, Sacco and Vanzetti arrested ***Accused of being anarchists***

What happened to Sacco & Vanzetti? Questionable trial S & V found guilty largely b/c they were anarchists and immigrants Executed in 1927 WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? “I might have died, unmarked, unknown, a failure. Now we are not a failure. This is our career and our triumph” Bartolomeo Vanzetti before his execution

Why did the KKK return? KKK wanted to restrict immigration the most Expands targets to include Catholics, Jews, immigrants and the “un-American” Goal = preserve America’s white Protestant civilization KKK + Nativism = 4 million members

Analyze this Political Cartoon.

What was the National Origins Act? Response by the government to immigration Restricted the number of immigrants by ethnic group (quotas) Allows America to let in “desirable” immigrants while keeping less desirable immigrants out

Today’s Activities Group 1 In your groups create a WORD WEB focusing on Prejudice in America Be sure to include information from this unit and past units Group 2 1) Page 202 - “The Palmer Raids” create a flow chart that explains what happened . Make sure chart is at least 5 boxes. 2) Do you think Palmer’s actions were justified? Could there be a modern situation where you think it would be justified? April 1919 US Postal Service intercepts 30 parcels that were bombs Next Examples of prejudice in America

End of Class–You should Know What the Red Scare was and why it is important. What Nativism is and why it is important. Who Sacco and Vanzetti were and why their case is important. Why the KKK has a resurgence during this era.

Read Nativism and Immigration Policies pgs 217 -219 1) As you read complete the following organizer: 2) Analyze the charts on top of 218: Answer the questions on the side of the chart 3) What reasons did the KKK member ship begin to decline in the late 1920s? Do you think membership is currently going down or up for the KKK? Why? 4) How did the National Origins Act help deal with the tensions created by nativism? Examples of prejudice against immigrants
