War’s End World War One ends in 1918
Millions of Americans return home with satisfaction  World peace has been established However, America soon faces economic, political, and social turmoil that is not settled until the Roaring 20s begin.. “I felt that when peace came we’d all by so joyful that nothing would weigh upon us again. I find, however, the problems of reconstruction loom so large that we are as much occupied with them as we have been with the problems of war.”

100 Percent Americanism World War I had lead to great feelings of patriotism….Go America! This will have lingering effects after War…if you love your country and have great pride, how would you feel about other countries? During war, hatred for the “hun” (or Germans) was great, once war is over this turns to another group in Europe…. 100 Percent Americanism- celebrated all things American, while it attacked all foreign ideas.. Impact?

Rise of Bolsheviks Russia left WWI because of an internal revolution…their monarchy was overthrown & after a short civil war, the Bolsheviks took over power. Bolsheviks- a communist group (Red Army) led by Vladimir Lenin What is communism? How does it differ from the American economic system? Predict: How will Americans respond to “Reds” or communists in their country? Why?

American response Communism and its direct threat to capitalism scared many Americans Hatred for the Huns turns to hatred for the “Reds” A Red Scare began in the United States- a widespread fear of communism and other radical ideas Palmer Raids- round up of suspected radicals; they arrested and deported thousands of those ‘suspected’.
