FIRE SAFETY

Fires can either be extinguished by smothering the flames with a fire blanket or clothing (removing the oxygen) or by using a fire extinguisher (removing the heat) To use a fire extinguisher properly, it must be aimed at the base of a fire and swept back and forth across that base.

Always use the right type of fire extinguisher for each specific type of fire. *LHHS extinguishers (ABC type) CLASS A Fires: Fires of organic matter that will leave ashes. Example: wood, paper, tissues Extinguishers: H2O, CO2, dry chemicals

CLASS B FIRES: Fires of flammable liquids Examples: Gasoline, solvents Extinguishers: CO2 , dry chemical NOTE: Water is not a good extinguisher because it spreads the liquid around.

CLASS D FIRES: Fires of burning metals EXAMPLES: Sodium, aluminum, magnesium EXTINGUISHERS: Sand and salt NOTE: Water is not a good extinguisher because it creates a violent reaction.

CLASS E FIRES: Fires of radioactive materials EXAMPLES: Uranium, plutonium EXTINGUISHER: Concrete
