What is Body Composition? The percentage of body fat to lean body mass. Lean body mass: Bone Water Muscle Connective tissue Organ tissue Teeth Pound for pound, muscle weights MORE than Fat!

How to use Body Composition. Determine what Body Composition is right for you. Then work to achieve and maintain it. Your scale weight shouldn’t be your focus… Instead, focus on your Body Composition!

Different methods of assessing your Body Composition Body Mass Index (BMI) Skin fold Measurement Underwater Weighing The Bod Pod Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)

Body Mass Index (BMI) A measure of body weight relative to height. BMI can be used to determine if people are at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese. To figure out BMI, use the following formula: A BMI of 18.5 up to 25 refers to a healthy weight A BMI of 25 up to 30 refers to overweight A BMI of 30 or higher refers to obese.

Skin fold Measurement The thickness of a skin fold is measured in three different locations on the body. A sum of 3 measurements are taken and compared in a chart for men & women to determine the percentage of body fat.

Underwater Weighting An individual is submerged and weighed underwater. Body fat percentage is calculated from body density. Muscle has higher density fat has lower density Fat people tend to float!

The Bod Pod The BOD POD measures the volume of air a person's body displaces while sitting inside a comfortable chamber, rather than measuring how much water their body displaces when dunked in a tank.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) BIA sends a small electrical current through the body and measures the body’s resistance to it. Fat-free tissues are good conductors. Fat is not a good conductor.
