The plague was a bubonic plague, a very rapid spread of a disease over a wide area. Bacteria, usually carried by rats, caused the plague. Fleas who infested rats, transferred bacteria to humans through bites. The rats and humans died, while the flea lived on! Historians suggest that the Plague began in Central Asia in the 1320’s and spread west along the Silk Road, reaching Europe by 1347. The first European cases of the disease started in Italy and spread quickly via rats on ships…

Effects of the Plague Between 1347 and 1352, the Plague killed 25-33% of Europe’s entire population. Businesses went bankrupt. Deaths caused a labor shortage. Trade in many towns declined. Construction and building projects stopped. Food supplies went down and many people starved.

However, fewer people meant serfs were more valuable to lords and enjoyed a higher standard of living and independence. In fact, feudalism and serfdom began to decline all together. Cities also became cleaner…
