Coastal management and conflicting views at Dawlish Warren? Setting the Scene You should aim to use approximately 400 words for this section. You should use for your report Add your name and candidate number as a ‘footer’. You may use PDF files, the internet etc as long as you reference your sources.

Coastal management and conflicting views at Dawlish Warren? Setting the Scene This involves: the investigation question (the green banner!) relevant information about the place(s) chosen as the focus for the investigation. an explanation of how the question links to the specification; the expected outcomes of your study;

Setting the Scene Describe the location of Dawlish Warren at a variety of scales (Think about using different sizes of maps – national, regional and local) Fig 1 is a national map. Dawlish Warren is a popular beach on the south coast of Devon, UK (see Figure 1). It has been estimated that the site receives over 800 000 visitors per year with about 20 000 visitors a day in peak season. Dawlish Warren is also an important site for nature conservation, comprising a diverse range of habitats across 505 acres. (Fig 1)

Coastal management and conflicting views at Dawlish Warren? Setting the Scene Different types of maps: For example - Google earth, OS maps etc to show the location of Dawlish Warren. These must be referenced – where you obtained your information (ie website)

Coastal management and conflicting views at Dawlish Warren? Setting the Scene Tourism was traditionally based on budget holidays and has continued to the present day. There are many holiday parks in the area offering accommodation in static caravans, as well as touring and camping sites. The Warren itself has remained largely undeveloped apart from a car park, retail outlets, fun-fair and golf course due to the existence of the mainline railway which runs close to the site. There are no beachfront hotels or promenades here. However, large numbers of visitors are attracted to the sandy beach and other attractions. Due to the ecological and economic importance of the location the area must be managed carefully, so as NOT to cause conflict. There are many coastal defences used at Dawlish Warren to protect different areas. Many tourist facilities – including shops, take-aways, and toilets. Typical tourist accommodation at Dawlish Warren – static caravans http://hazelwood.co.uk/facilities/dawlish-warren-beach-resort/ Maps and photographs should be included, annotated and referenced. http://www.dawlishwarren.info/accommodation/camping-caravans-holiday-parks/ladys-mile-and-oakcliff-holiday-parks/

Coastal management and conflicting views at Dawlish Warren? How successful are the coastal defences at Dawlish Warren? Setting the Scene To answer the investigation question, you will need to use 3 ‘outcomes’. An outcome is something you can prove or disprove using fieldwork (a bit like an hypothesis!) Once you have looked at and answered your outcomes, you will be able to answer the investigation question (in the green banner!). These are the outcomes you will be using to answer the investigation question. Choose 3 outcomes (1 from each pair). 1a There is a ‘need’ to protect Dawlish Warren OR 1b There are social, economic and environmental reasons why Dawlish Warren should be protected. 2a A number of different coastal defences have been chosen at Dawlish Warren OR 2b There is a distinct pattern as to the sea defence chosen and the use of the land it is protecting. 3a There is evidence that the stakeholders are happy with the coastal management techniques that are used OR 3b The coastal defences at Dawlish Warren are sustainable and do not cause conflict. Important: In Setting the Scene, take each outcome and state what YOU think will be the answer eg, outcome 2 – I think that there are lots of different coastal defences at Dawlish Warren. When we visit, I believe I will find evidence of ……. , so …………… are used. You must ALWAYS link your work back to the investigation question (green banner!)
