Bullying Tom O’Reilly

Bullying Bullying takes place when, A student is the victim of any unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.

Bullying The student who is bullied has difficulty defending himself/herself.

Where does bullying happen??? Hallways Bathrooms Gym Cafeteria Playground The Classroom Bullying doesn’t just happen at school, it can take place anywhere.

Types of Bullying Verbal Social Physical Emotional “Cyberbullying” Name calling, rumors, threats… Ruining somebody’s reputation, exclusion… Hitting, fighting, property damage, stealing… Social exclusion, intimidation… bullying using technology (Facebook, Twitter, text messages, etc.)

Bullying Terms Gossiping: Spreading rumors that may be true or false about someone or telling others information about someone that was to be kept between two people. Hazing: Any action taken or situation created intentionally that causes embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule, risks emotional and/or physical pain regardless of the person’s willingness to participate. Bystander: A bystander may or may not be a friend of the target, but he or she is aware that the bullying is happening.

Bullying Facts Estimated 160,000 students miss school everyday because of bullying. Bullying takes place most when there is no adult supervision. Bullying peaks in middle school, but never disappears completely. Boys tend to bully boys and girls. Girls tend to bully mostly other girls. 60% of those associated as a bully in grades 6-9 had 1 or more criminal convictions by age 24.

Bullying Situations Jennifer recently broke up with Andrew. Andrew is now dating Melissa. Jennifer convinces all of her friends not to speak with or hang out with Melissa. Is this bullying? When John walks into the hallway, Chris repeatedly knocks his books out of his hand everyday. Is this bullying?

Ways to Avoid Bullying Leave expensive things at home. Hang out with friends. Avoid unsupervised areas. Sit near the bus driver on the bus or by the teacher in class. Don’t walk alone. Avoid places where bullying is known to occur.
