Instructors: George Crowl APP-2 Apprentice Active Membership This PowerPoint is provided for those who may not have appropriate training aids available in a ship or location. This generally follows a companion lesson plan available at www.Crowl.org/George. I expect you to modify it to fit your situation and teaching style. I am more concerned that Scouts learn than this fit a specific style. I am, however, a fan of the Effective Teaching model. Teaching EDGE is somewhat simplistic in its approach, but that has some advantages. Note: These lesson plans may also be used for teaching in the ship. For administrative convenience, they cover the entire specific numbered requirement (except this one, where Galley is covered separately!). Individual Sea Scout Academy lessons may only cover part of the requirements. Similarly, ships may find that even just a portion of a subrequirement is all that can be done during a particular ship meeting. Adapt these lessons as needed to fit your youth and your situation. Share these plans with your youth who are teaching. Philosophy: Sea Scout Academy’s primary purpose is to teach the material to the Sea Scout. If the Sea Scout demonstrates mastery of parts of the subject, then the instructor should annotate on the class roster what has been passed, in the instructor’s opinion. Skippers have the right to re-examine any Sea Scout in any requirement. (Knots are not a good subject to give a pass in.) SSA may schedule only portions of ORD-8. Instructors: George Crowl

Course Outline a. Provide evidence that you are fulfilling your obligations to the ship, including fund-raisers. Note: Check with your ship's purser. b. Obtain the Sea Scout uniform. Describe the Sea Scout work and dress uniforms. Tell how and when the uniforms are worn and explain care of uniforms. Requirements: Reference: See "Ground Tackle" on page 147. Equipment Required: Ship 24 has miniature anchors and a sandbox for demonstration. Need as many different real anchors as possible. Strongly recommend having a real Danforth. Boat(s) with anchor(s) for weighing and setting anchor. Ratio: 1:6 Instructor:Student, youth make good assistants.

APP-2a Provide evidence that you are fulfilling your obligations to the ship, including fund-raisers. Note: Check with your ship's purser. Explain the ship's dues obligations. Discuss with the Scout how s/he can meet that, and if it presents a financial challenge for the Scout or hir family. Explain how ship fund-raisers work, what share the individual Sea Scout gets, and how that money may be used. Explain the accounting system the ship uses and how the Scout can keep track of his balance in the ship account.

Dues and Obligations Ship's dues Work with purser Money raising obligations Your share of money raising How you can spend it How to keep track Explain the ship's dues obligations. 21st Century Uniform One uniform, youth / adults, summer / winter, dress / work Similar to other BSA uniforms 21st Century Uniform – Sea Scouts has had six different uniforms for many years, and this has been seen as a problem. Some of those uniforms are hard to obtain. So, we have solved it, we have a 7th uniform, the 21st Century Uniform. It has several advantages. It is both a dress uniform (winter and summer) and a work uniform (winter and summer) for both youth and adults. In other words, it is like the Boy Scout uniform, one uniform for all occasions. Adding bling makes it a dress uniform. It is readily available from Dickies and some Wal-Marts. The insignia is worn like the BSA uniform. All the insignia is available from the Scout Shop.
