What is Sustainable Development? Sustainable development (SD) is defined in the Brundtland Report as “development that meets the needs and aspirations of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Key National developments and priorities for Local Government in Guyana The holding of the Local Government Elections on March 18, 2016. Decentralization of power to local government organs through the creation of additional townships. Development of a Municipal Development Plan

Progress made in forwarding the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030 National Level The preparation and presentation of the National Budget for the 2016 to encompass strategies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Ratification of International Conventions for Food Security and Climate Adaptation

Municipal Level Provision of Training Progress made in forwarding the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030 (CONT’D) Municipal Level Provision of Training Community Developmental Works (involving residents) Inter-Municipal cooperation and collaboration Hosting of Green Conference and Exposition Partnership with the Ministry of Social Protection to avail the facilities for the provision of alternative to custodial sentence (Community Service) Programme.

How can the LGAs, including CLGF, support this process? “Some 8.5 million people have made their voices heard to the United Nations” - His Excellency, Ban Ki Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations Excellency, Mr. David Arthur Granger (Brigadier Retired), President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, “Unity of effort is essential to confront the difficult but necessary choices which must be made to realise the goal of sustainable development.”

How can the LGAs, including CLGF, support this process? (CONT’D) Increase funding to offset short and long term local government projects and community developmental works. Facilitate consultations, collaboration and communication with all stakeholders on the Sustainable Development Goals. Foster educational training and workshops for both the citizens and local government officers. Provide assistance with public awareness and public education programmes.
