C o u n t r y D e v e l o p m e n t The first recorded gas attack during WWI was by the french. They used it to stop the German Army from advancing throughout Belgium in August 1914.

French soldier and Early Gas Mask

H o w d i d t h e y u s e i t? tear gas grenades or shells of xylyl bromide that were used originally as irritant

H o w d i d t h e y u s e i t? Chlorine gas released from pressurized containers with the aid of wind direction

How It Changed Fighting Techniques Poison gas created a new element of surprise Soldiers realized the trenches didn’t hide them from all kinds of attacks Creating effective protection from the gas became a priority

Poison Gas was most feared weapon of this war. I n t e r e s t i n g F a c t s Poison Gas was most feared weapon of this war. If attacks were unsuccessful, victim would be left in agony for weeks or months before giving in to injuries

H o w I t’s I m p r o v e d ? it has become deadlier. nerve gas did not exist in WWI. most gases used were tear gas, chlorine, phosgene, and mustard gas. Poison gas is no longer used except by rogue states.

A d v a n t a g e s Difficult to protect yourself from gas attacks Huge element of surprise If the soldiers weren’t killed they were still greatly affected by the gas Mustard gas remained in soil, making the areas affected dangerous

D i s a d v a n t a g e s Poor weather rain would put out the gas bombs Deadly if used on a windy day Easy to detect ex. Chlorine

I m p a c t o n W a r US also developed new chemical weapons. Harry S. Truman, captain of U.S. field artillery unit, fired poison gas against the Germans in 1918. Total of over 100,000 tons of chemical weapons were used throughout WWI. Total of 30,000 troops were killed due to poison gas, 500,000 injured. (2,000 Americans)

A f t e r W W I . . . Yemeni Conflict of 1996-67 Iran-Iraq War of 1980-1988 Used to full advantage against forces that did not possess gas masks

I n t e r e s t i n g F a c t s 1990 → US and Soviet Union signed agreement to cut chemical weapon arsenals by 80% 1993 → International Treaty signed banning production and use of chemical weapons. Took effect in 1997.
