Aggression Remember Italy took Ethiopia 1935 Spanish Civil War led to the Rome-Berlin Axis

Hitler Had said that he intended to unite all German Speaking Peoples Treaty of Versailles: Austria Czechoslovakia…Sudetenland Poland and the Polish Corridor (Danzig)

Europe 1935

Hitler Annexed Austria 1938 Austria’s reaction World Reaction

Hitler attacked and took The Sudetenland 1938 Czech reaction Europe’s Reaction: The Munich Accords

The Munich Accords Hitler Neville Chamberlain Edouard Daladier Hitler said that he was done expanding England and France Let him keep Austria and the Sudetenland Czechs very unhappy

The Policy of Appeasement France and England allowed Hitler to keep Austria and the Sudetenland They believed that Hitler was done expanding Neville Chamberlain was a hero in England English believed that Chamberlain kept them out of war

Then Hitler took the rest of Czechoslovakia And made a nonagression treaty with Russia Also a secret agreement with Russia over an upcoming invasion of Poland

In the Meantime 1939 Mussolini took Albania

Italy invades Albania

Hitler demands Danzig and the Polish Corridor Wanted to build a road across the Polish corridor linking the two parts of Germany. Wanted the return of the port city of Danzig Was refused by the Poles and the League of Nations

Hitler claimed that… The Poles were committing atrocities on Germans in the Polish Corridor So he attacked! England and France had promised Poland help if Hitler attacked

BLITZKRIEG Means lightening war Brits and French could not send help on time As the Germans attacked Poland on their western front…Russia attacked from the east. Warsaw fell in 3 weeks

SITZKRIEG From the fall of Poland (fall of 1939) to the spring of 1940 Hitler made no other aggressive move Many in Europe and U.S. womdered if he was done However…Russia was pretty active

After Poland Russia demanded occupation of the Baltic States Estonia Latvia Lithuania And Finland

Finland fought Russian occupation Finland fought alone Lasted for 3 months The U.S. felt badly about Finland The Fins were the only country to repay the U.S. in full after WWI Congress voted to send the Fins $30,000,000 in non-military supplies

Spring 1940 April 1940 Hitler demanded occupation of Denmark and Norway. May 1940 Hitler demanded occupation of the Netherlands and Belgium The Neatherlands held out for 5 days Belgium held out for 18 days

Belgium Had help from the English and French BUT they were trapped at Dunkirk

Miracle at Dunkirk English and French troops in Belgium had their backs to the English Chanel and were going to be overwhelmed by German Troops They called for help from anyone with private crafts that could reach them 600 private craft arrived and saved 90% of the men trapped there

BUT The English and French had to leave their weapons behind Hitler attacked France and France fell in 3 weeks Italy attacked France from the south in the last week

Terms of the Armistice The French had to give up 1 million POWs to the Germans Germany would occupy 2/3 of France Allowed for a puppet government in the Southern third The Vichy government was led by Petain (a French general who was a heor in WWI)

Hitler made an offer To Winston Churchill Since the English were also Aryans… Hitler would leave England alone if England would acknowledge that the rest of the European continent belonged to Germany. Churchill refused

The Battle of Britain Hitler began to bomb the Brits non stop in order to prepare for an invasion across the English Channel The bomb9ing continued until the end of the war First they targeted military bases and weapons factories Then…civilian population

German civilians Began to starve as a result of the British navy blockading the Coast

Charles de Gaulle (French) Set up a government in exile in England AND organized the Free French Movement Was an underground organization in France and elsewhere in Europe dedicated to interferring with the Nazi efforts Had their own newspaper, helped POWs escape

Back to the Battle of Britain Hitler’s Luftwaffe v the RAF (Royal Air Force) The Brits had radar Hitler was forced to “delay” the invasion of Britain.
