Service Procedure For Changing Engine Oil And An Oil Filter

Step 1 Warm the engine to operating temperature.

Step 2 Put on eye or face protection and work gloves.

Step 3 Raise the vehicle on a lift or place it on jack stands in a level position.

Step 4 Place a catch pan under the oil drain plug. Title Layout Step 4 Place a catch pan under the oil drain plug.

Title Layout Step 5 Unscrew the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise. Hold on to the drain plug with your hand. Allow enough time for the oil to drain completely and stop dripping out of the pan.

Step 6 After all the oil has stopped dripping out, reinstall the drain plug. Torque (screw in) the drain plug to minimum specifications until it is snug on its seal. The plug can wear and strip easily.

Step 7 Position your catch pan under the oil filter.

Step 8 Use an oil filter wrench to unscrew the filter. Be careful that the hot oil does not run down your arm and burn you.

Step 9 Obtain the correct replacement filter. Compare the old and the new filters. Threads and O ring seals must be the same size.

Step 10 Wipe some clean oil on the rubber O-ring and thread the new oil filter onto the engine.

Step 11 Tighten the new oil filter by hand. Never use an oil filter wrench. Overtightening may also distort the O-ring and cause a severe oil leak.

Step 12 Lower the car to the ground and add the correct amount and type of oil.

Step 13 Start the engine and make sure the oil pressure light goes out.

Step 14 Let the engine run while you check for leaks under the engine compartment.

Step 15 Shut off the engine and check the oil level again.
