Architecture Tools List

59 Tools of which 50 are COTS Fields GOTS

Tool Categories 5

Architecture and M&S Long a vision of the architecture community, to be able to simulate architectural descriptions (models) in support of, e.g., Capabilities Based Assessments (pre-milestone A activity) Analysis of Alternatives (JCIDS, DAS requirement) To identify and/or compute: Process bottlenecks Process durations (e.g., Time Sensitive Targeting) Communications bandwidth requirements Battle attrition ratios Etc.

Recent Initiatives DoD Modeling & Simulation Coordination Office (M&SCO) Defense Intelligence M&S Strategic Plan

M&SCO website at www.msco.mil [NOTE: This slide cleared for public release (Distribution A) by DoD Office of Security Review (Case No. 09-S-0140 & 09-S-1278).]

Types of Architecture Data Typically Used OV-6c / 10c for scenario sequences SV-1 for equipment laydown (quantities, locations, etc.) SV-2 for communications networks OV-2/3/5 for information requirements <-> SV/SvcV-2/6 for communications alternatives

May require a different approach Conventional Sequence M&S Go in reverse order 1. Determine metrics (MOE, MOP, Capability attributes) and/or events to be identified. 1. Build the architecture 2. Determine the models and data that will enable those metric calculations and event identifications. 2. “Mine” the architecture data 4. Develop, collect, and/or access models and data 3. Make decisions 5. Run simulator, iterate loop, use results

Summary Like tools in many trades, there are many kinds of tools A corollary to “fit for purpose” modeling might be, “use the right tool for the purpose” There is interest in executable architectures or simulated architectures It may require a different approach to architecting
