Your Careers & Enterprise Centre Gemma Garrett School of Geography Careers Consultant

How are you feeling about careers? I’m not sure what to do after graduation I have a few ideas I know what job/further study I want to do We’re here to help you – whatever stage you’re at Probably talking to 2 camps of people: Don’t know what you want to do after graduation: what job? Whether to do a masters? Do know what you want to do and need info about where to find vacancies, when to apply and maybe support with getting a strong job/masters application sent out Spend a few minutes talking to each group of people. First want to allay fears that it’s impossible to get a job in the current climate. In 2014/15, 93% of UK Geography grads were in employment 6 months after graduation – so the job market is significantly improving.

I’m not sure of my next step… Speak to a Careers Consultant: Call 020 7882 8533 or book in person in WG3, Queens building – 9.30am-5pm, Mon-Fri Attend an event: Book at: www.careers.qmul.ac.uk/events Research jobs: Geography Careers and Careers & Enterprise QM+ pages, www.prospects.ac.uk Don’t know what I want to do after graduation. This might be because you’ve realised you don’t want to do a job related to your degree and so the question is, now what? Or might be for Geography students that you aren’t sure what jobs there are that use your degree. There are two ways of approaching the ‘what next’ question: first is think about it now, second is wait until your exams are over. Recommend that you start to think about it now. Experience of working with graduates who don’t start thinking about it until July/August after graduation is that whilst they get into work, it takes them an extra 2-3 months over other graduates because they are starting the process late. Often the first barrier is working out how to even approach this question. Here are a few ideas: Talk to a CC: book a 1-2-1 – intro Research careers out there Attend career events to get a feel for different areas of work

Explore your options at events 29th Sept: QMUL Job Market 4th Oct: Civil Service Fast Stream talk 5th October: Careers in insurance 12th Oct: Business & Finance Fair 19th Oct: Law careers for non-law students 28th Nov: Careers in international development tbc: Careers in sustainability & environmental services Plus (dates tbc) careers in: teaching, marketing, market research, Foreign Commonwealth Office, public sector… Next Spring: ‘Where can a Geography degree take you?’ www.careers.qmul.ac.uk/events 28-Sep QMUL Jobs Market 04-Oct Civil Service Fast Stream presentation 05-Oct Careers in insurance panel (part of Focus on Finance) 12-Oct Business and Finance Careers Fair 19-Oct Law careers for non-law (HSS) students 23-Oct Ace your application with the civil service fast stream 30/31-Oct Law Careers Fair (Day 1 and Day 2) 01-Nov Video assessment workshop (led by FDM) 16-Nov Ace the Assessment Centre with the Civil Service Fast Stream TBC Careers event with Foreign Commonwealth Office TBC Careers event with Market Research Society TBC Public sector careers panel TBC Careers in teaching event (with different routes/providers represented) TBC Careers in Marketing TBC Skills workshops on: applications, commercial awareness, etc

Help! I need support with applications… Find opportunities: Jobs: www.careers.qmul.ac.uk/jobs, TargetJobs, etc Further study: FindaMasters.com, etc Tutorials: Reflecting on & evidencing your skills Book an application appointment or mock interview: Call 020 7882 8533 or book in person in WG3, Queens building - 9.30am-5pm, Mon-Fri Attend an employer skills workshop: www.careers.qmul.ac.uk/events I know what I want to do and need help info about vacancies, deadlines and job app support. Outline first the two types of job vacancy available to you. Deadlines different for each one. First is on a graduate scheme – this is a 1-3 year scheme with a company whereby alongside the job that you do you will get lots of training for the job: exist in lots of different sectors. Most deadlines for this are October and Nov. Start researching and applying now: schemes have opened. Second way is through a graduate level position. These are open throughout the year so you can apply for these spring/summer next year . How most people find their jobs. For further study try to get your application in Dec - April. Where to find vacancies: targetjobs, jobonline, Graduate Talent Pool and FindaMasters for further study Also look at for Careers emails that will start this year. How can we help you with your applications? What we offer: mock interviews, CV & cover letter, PG study statement checking, psychometric testing practice, video interview practice assessment centre workshops

Help! I haven’t got anything on my CV… Other opportunities on/near campus: www.careers.qmul.ac.uk/workexperience QRecruit and QConsult opportunities: Internships, work experience in a charity, team consultancy projects & challenging temp work www.careers.qmul.ac.uk/qrecruit www.careers.qmul.ac.uk/qconsult QM JobOnline: www.careers.qmul.ac.uk/jobs Finally: for anyone panicking and thinking – I have NOTHING on my CV –QProjects opportunities: project leader 1 day/week local charity. It is very difficult to help someone into employment after graduation who hasn’t done anything other than course and part time work. Everything from leadership positions like course rep, & society committees help your applications. But some kind of experience in any professional environment is going to be the game-changer. If you don’t have this on your CV then QProjects can be what will get you that job after graduation. Doesn’t matter if not in area that you want to work in or you don’t want to work in a charity – value is the transferable skills gained from a work place environment. QM JobOnline: lists internships, part-time and graduate jobs QProjects – 1 day/week for up to three months in a project leader role working for a local not-for-profit organisation QInterns – PT internship opportunities to gain meaningful work experience QConsult suite of projects – work in a team to gain consultancy work and develop valuable transferable skills
