Sustainable development By Martyn Brown Electronic engineering Sustainable development Hello , My name is Martyn Brown and I will be presenting a presentation on a sustainable development issue. Sustainable development is basically developing the world we have today, by making it more environmentally friendly, using solar power, not using fossil fuels, reducing pollution.

Introduction In this first out of two pieces of coursework I am going to be presenting an article about a sustainable development issue which in this case is about solar power. The following article in this presentation will be summarised : ‘Solar Impulse Concept Plane Unveiled’ The article was found on the website called http://spectrum.ieee.org/ The topic that I have chosen is solar power this is because, solar power is a feature that a lot of countries will start to use and transport could use the power of solar to drive the cars, fly the aeroplanes etc. I felt solar power was a good topic compared to the rest of the list because I could expand into what I think will happen to solar power in the future. I have chosen an article on an aeroplane that uses solar power to fly.

Solar power Solar power is an invention in which it produces electricity using the natural resources we have, which is sunlight. Here is a diagram how solar power works , but this is in a house.

Solar Impulse Concept Plane Unveiled This article is about a solar powered aeroplane that will be running off rechargeable batteries which will be getting there charge from the sunlight. There is a test procedure occurring which will be a flight for thirty six hours running just off these rechargeable batteries What if this works out ? What if this works out? If this test procedure was to work out I could see many of the aeroplanes being converted to solar power, this is because it would be cheaper in the long run, reduce pollution, and would be developing the world, no fossil fuels would be used either which would mean they could be not used at all or used for other applications.

Advantages The advantages of solar power in aeroplanes are that : You don’t have to use fossil fuels to produce the power. There is no pollution with solar energy. Cheaper to run a plane which could mean cheaper flights in the future. It is a renewable resource. You save a lot of money in the long term with solar energy. As technology grows the generation will be able to improve the disadvantages in the next slide. As you can see the advantages fill up this page, solar power is a very overwhelming invention , not only does it work for free basically , the only part you have to pay for is the solar panels because the energy from the sun charges them up.

Disadvantages The disadvantages of using solar power in aeroplanes is that : They can be expensive to buy, but an aeroplane is expensive to build anyway. So why not build more solar powered planes? Solar power can not be created at night. There are not many disadvantages with solar power because it is such a high quality invention. The only major problem is that you can not create the power at night. In the future there may well be a solution to this meaning solar energy will charge up at night as well.

Conclusion I have come to a conclusion that in the future solar power will be the most used electrical source because we are slowly running out of fossil fuels, this will stop: Pollution Global warming It will also get considerably cheaper in the future because there will be a bigger market and demand for solar energy. Aeroplanes could also be transformed to using solar power to save not just the environment but money in the long term. Overall in this short presentation I have summarised what the article is mainly about , the advantages and disadvantages of solar energy on aeroplanes and just solar energy itself. I think in the future there may well be a path for all aeroplanes to use solar energy because it will not only save the environment, it will be cheaper flights meaning more people will travel abroad. The travelling market will then expand.
