GRID BEARINGS Grid North is the northern direction of the north-south grid lines on a map. Bearings measured from Grid North are called grid bearings. Grid bearings are measured clockwise from a fixed zero line, or from any easting. Grid bearings are measured with a protractor or compass. EASTINGS GRID BEARING 405.11 Silver Star OHP-1

MEASURING A GRID BEARING WITH A PROTRACTOR 1. Identify start and finish points. 2. Draw a line, or plotting ray, from Point A to Point B. 3. Place the center hole of the protractor where the plotting ray intersects an easting. Lengthen plotting ray past protractor edge. Ensure graduations under 6. Align the protractor’s center line directly over the easting. 7. Read the grid bearing off the protractor where the plotting ray passes beneath it. OHP-2 405.11 Silver Star

MEASURING A GRID BEARING WITH A COMPASS 1. Set the declination to zero. 2. Draw a plotting ray from your location (A) to your destination (B). 3. Lay the compass along the plotting ray. Ensure that the cover points in the direction you are going. 4. Turn the compass dial until the compass meridian lines are parallel with the eastings and north on the compass indicates north on the map. 5. Read the bearing at the index pointer. 405.11 Silver Star OHP-3
