Motion Vocabulary Part 1 Fall 2016

Rate A ratio that compares 2 related things. Speed How fast an object changes its position. Velocity Speed with direction.

Average Speed (m/s) The rate of change between the distance travelled and the time of travel. s = Total Distance Total Time

Different ways you will see the speed equation: s = displacement/time s = position/time s = Δd/ Δ t s = change in distance/change in time s = final position – initial position final time – initial time

Instantaneous Speed The rate of travel at a specific point in time.

= Change in Speed Total Time This is NOT an equation! This is a unit of measurement! Acceleration (m/s2) The rate of change in speed over a specified time. = Change in Speed Total Time

Different ways you will see the acceleration equation: a = speed/time a = velocity/time a = Δs/ Δ t a = change in speed/change in time a = final speed – initial speed final time – initial time

Inertia The tendency of an object to resist a change in its state of motion or rest.
