2 Lessons - Popular entertainment: Movies and music Lo- To understand how movies and music developed and influenced American society in the 1920’s

What can you learn about why the cinema became so popular? ‘It was really an experience. You would be treated like a king or queen. You were issued into an enormous lobby of marble or gilt with huge stairways leading up to the balconies. All the carpets were at least an inch or two thick. Everything was done in there to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel very important.’

Increasing popularity of cinemas 1910- 8000 cinemas in the U.S. 1926- 17,000 cinema in the U.S. 1930- 303,000 cinemas in the U.S. A visit to the cinema had become part of the American way of life. Can you suggest reasons why the cinemas were so popular?

Answer all 8 of the following questions Why was cinema so popular? Until 1927 all movies were silent.
