Bloodiest Conflict in History WORLD WAR II

What was WWII? Largest war in human history. Involved countries, colonies, and territories around the entire world. By the end, over 70 million were dead. It lasted from 1939 until 1945.

Who was on each side? Axis Powers Germany Italy Japan Allied Powers Great Britain Soviet Union United States France Surrendered to Germany in 1940 after 6 weeks

Main CAUSES of WW2: Treaty of Versaillies Rise of Totalitarianism Hitler’s Actions Failure of Appeasement Failure of the League of Nations

Cause #1 Treaty of Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles CAUSE#1 The Treaty of Versailles Lloyd George England Vittor Orlando Italy Georges Clemenceau France Woodrow Wilson U.S In 1919, these men met to discuss how Germany was to be made to pay for the damage world war one had caused.

voted to POWER People a man who promised to rip up the The German people were very unhappy about the treaty and thought that it was too harsh. People were dissatisfied with the government and voted to POWER a man who promised to rip up the Treaty of Versailles.

Adolph Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany January 1933 – Adolph Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany A strong leader declared to the German people that he would restore German pride, rebuild their shattered country and have vengeance for the Treaty of Versailles.

What is Fascism? Political belief that says the individual is less important than the nation. Glorifies violence, believes it is needed to “prove” strength of a people. Uses nationalism and racism. Dictatorships. Italy and then Germany became fascist.

Video Clip #2 “The Clouds of War” Watch this clip and look for: Mussolini’s Actions in Ethiopia Hitler’s Actions Munich Agreement

Cause#3 Hitler’s Actions

Hitler's Actions Adolf Hitler became   Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in Jan.1933. Almost immediately he began Secretly building up Germany's army & weapons. In 1934, he increased the size of the army, began building warships and created a German air force. Compulsory military service was also introduced.

Although Britain and France were aware of Hitler's actions, they were also concerned about the rise of Communism They believed that a stronger Germany might help to prevent the spread of Communism to the West. Appeasement

Consider this… Your 5 year old cousin is very hungry and has stolen a few cookies already. He is now trying to take another one. What would you do? #1 – severely punish him, spank him, lock him up, make him pay for it #2 – tell him it’s wrong and make him pay for it #3 – immediately stop him and make sure he takes no more #4 – tell him he could have this last piece and promise not to take any more

Cause #4 Failure of Appeasement *Appeasement means giving in to someone provided their demands are seen as reasonable. During the 1930s, many politicians in both Britain and France came to see that the terms of the Treaty of Versailles had placed restrictions on Germany that were unfair. For some, Hitler's actions were seen as understandable and justifiable.

British Prime Minister, Chamberlain adopted appeasement 31 31 31 31 British Prime Minister, Chamberlain adopted appeasement (trying to satisfy someone by giving him what he wants ) Munich Agreement 1938 Chamberlain agreed to give Hitler parts of Czechoslovakia. Hitler agreed not to expand more. 31 31 31 31

WHY?!?! believed that Germany was unfairly treated. 32 32 32 32 believed that Germany was unfairly treated. Britain had not recovered from the Great Depression. hoped that Nazi Germany could work against communism. France followed Britain. She also faced the same problems in the 1930s. 32 32 32 32
