What is the Star of Excellence? A program designed to recognize Outstanding Achievement within the Hospitality, Tourism and Sport Division

Designed to Encourage Both Academic Excellence and Involvement in Activities considered important to the development of a exemplary Hospitality, Tourism and Sport professional

and is recognized for accumulating more than How Does it Work? A student can earn points in the following categories Academic Excellence Volunteerism Community Involvement Professionalism X-Factor and is recognized for accumulating more than 1,000,000 points

Points are awarded for high averages and can be earned each semester Academic Excellence Points are awarded for high averages and can be earned each semester 90-99% average - 400,000 points 80-89% average - 300,000 points 70-79% average - 100,000 points Maximum of 700,000 points can be earned in this category

External Academic Awards Points are awarded for receiving an award or scholarship Each award received 200,000 points Only awards, scholarships or recognition in competitions related to Hospitality, Tourism & Sport Studies programs are eligible for consideration - Most bursaries are not eligible

Volunteerism Involvement in functions that are not a required component of your program

Points are Earned on an Annual Basis Vary according to the number of functions 5 or more functions - 400,000 4 functions - 250,000 3 functions - 150,000 2 functions - 75,000 1 function - 50,000 A function is defined as a scheduled shift at an event Opportunities are posted on the HTS Homeroom on Blackboard and the Co-Curricular Record

Mentoring/Tutoring For participating as a Peer Mentor or Peer Tutor Per semester - 100,000 points For more details visit the Peer Mentoring & Peer Tutoring organizations on the Co-Curricular Record

Community Involvement Active involvement in Clubs and Organizations Student Administrative Council Tourism clubs Clubs and Organizations External hospitality related organizations Athletics Per membership (annual basis) - 50,000 points

Professionalism Attendance at industry related events or trade shows Per event - 50,000 points Obtaining relevant certificates or training that is not a required component of program Smart Serve, First Aid, etc. Per current certificate - 50,000 points Certificates gained prior to start of program will not be counted

X – Factor Going Above and Beyond Per semester - 50,000 points Given at the professor's discretion based on commitment, attitude and enthusiasm! The professor’s recommendation must be seconded by another professor Per semester - 50,000 points Maximum of 150,000 points

Recognition Levels 1,000,000 Points Certificate (For your Portfolio)

1,500,000 points Certificate for your portfolio Letter of Recommendation from HTS acting chair – Damian Goulbourne

Important Facts to Remember Points must be accumulated in at least three categories It is the student’s responsibility to provide proof of achievements with each submission (i.e. transcript, co-curricular record etc.) Application deadline is MARCH 30, 2017 Star of Excellence Application form can be completed via the Co-Curricular organization page for SoE: https://getinvolved.niagaracollege.ca/organization/S OE
