The Battle of Britain

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING TODAY? To know what the Battle of Britain was and understand its importance

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING TODAY? Learning Outcomes You will be able to describe what Operation Sealion was? You will be able to explain what the fighting was like during the Battle of Britain? You will learn who won the Battle of Britain and evaluate some reasons why?

BY MAY 1940 ALMOST ALL OF WESTERN EUROPE HAD FALLEN TO THE MIGHT OF THE NAZI WAR MACHINE. ONLY BRITAIN STOOD IN GERMANYS WAY TO TOTAL DOMINATION!!! “The Battle for France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. So let us therefore be prepared to do our duty so men can say ‘This was their finest hour’” Winston Churchill June 1940

Operation Sealion ‘Operation Sealion’ - The codename for the Nazi invasion of Britain. Hermann Goering - Head of the German Air force (Luftwaffe). THE PLAN – To destroy the RAF (Royal Air Force) by bombing airfields and shooting down British planes so German troops could land and conquer Britain Hermann Goering

The fighter planes Luftwaffe Messerschmiits and Stucas RAF (Royal Air Force) Spitfires and Hurricanes 591 fighter planes

The Bombers It was the job of the German fighter planes to protect the German bombers and shoot down any RAF planes that attacked them

A Dog Fight – Stuka vs. Spitfire

Making a hit!

TASK : Arrange the following statements into those that were good for the RAF and those that were bad for the RAF. The Germans had failed to complete their task by the autumn of 1940. Bad weather in September meant the Germans could no longer continue with their invasion plans   German fighter planes were told to fly close together, which made it easy for the British to attack German planes only had enough fuel in their tanks to last 30 minutes At the start of the battle the Germans had 824 fighters. The British only had 591. Many British pilots hadn’t received the same amount of training as the German fighters By July/August the British were making more and more fighter planes. They made 560 a month. Germany were only making 150 a month. The Germans were training 800 new pilots a month. Britain were training just 200 a month Many German pilots had experience of fighting in Poland and France. The RAF pilots hadn’t had this experience.

Is the Battle of Britain important?
