Rotary’s PolioPlus Program The Goal of Rotary is the Global Eradication of Polio and Certification. APHA November 2007 John Sever, M.D., PhD.

Rotary-The Organization Founded in 1905 in Chicago, Illinois Business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

> 200 countries/territories, ~1 > 200 countries/territories, ~1.2 million members, over 32,000 clubs

Rotary’s vision In 1979: Rotary’s first five-year grant to provide polio vaccine and Rotarian volunteers to deliver the vaccine to 6 million children in the Philippines. Similar five year grants were given to Haiti, Bolivia, Morocco, Sierra Leone and Cambodia. In 1985: Rotary launches project to immunize all children of the world against polio. Rotarians raise a total of US$247 million (a second campaign was held in 2002 and raised US$135 mil).

Rotary’s vision Rotarians provide an army of volunteers to support immunization campaigns Three years later (1988), the World Health Assembly adopts a resolution to eradicate polio. Rotary joins the WHO and jointly accepts the goal of global eradication of polio and certification.

A Public-Private Partnership World Health Organization UNICEF Rotary International Centers for Disease Control

A Public-Private Partnership In cooperation with: - Polio-affected country governments - Donor governments

Rotary’s Role Rotary is the only non-technical agency in the spearheading partnership. Rotary’s commitment, in dollars and time, is the largest support by a private organization of a public health initiative. Polio eradication partnership viewed as a model of public/private cooperation. The success of the polio eradication partnership is widely viewed as a model of public and private sector cooperation for other public health and development initiatives. Rotary’s contribution More than US$650 million to benefit polio eradication efforts in 122 nations world-wide by the time the world is certified polio-free. This makes Rotary’s commitment, in dollars and time, the largest support by a private organization of a public health initiative.
