End-cap Mechanics FDR Overview of the Project Debbie Greenfield, RAL 1 November 2001 CLRC
End-cap Mechanics FDR - Agenda Today: Overview - aims of the review Requirements Baseline Design, summary of the overall design Presentations of each major area being reviewed - lots of opportunities for questions Tomorrow: Discussions among reviewers Feedback CLRC
End-cap Mechanics The obvious stuff! 2 SCT End-caps fitting inside the 2 TRT End-caps Physically, electrically and thermally isolated from all other components (apart from the 4 fixation points) Major Components of End-cap Mechanics: Support Wings - either end of the End-cap (also form part of the thermal enclosure. Attach to squirrel cage of the TRT. Outer Thermal Enclosure Cylinder - between the SCT support cylinder and the TRT CLRC
End-cap Mechanics The obvious stuff! - continued Inner Thermal Enclosure Cylinder - between the Pixel support tube and the inner bore of the SCT. Support Cylinder - supports the discs in position. Supports the services. Rigidly connected to wings. Disc Fixings - hold discs in support cylinder Bare Discs - 9 in each End-cap Disc Inserts - provide z location for cooling blocks Cooling blocks - also provide location for modules CLRC
End-cap Mechanics The obvious stuff! - continued Cooling pipes - C3F8 evaporative cooling Low Mass Power tapes Optical fibre harnesses Patch panels - PPF0 on disc, PPF1 at end of cryostat CLRC
End-cap Mechanics FDR - Module Situation K4 module does not meet electrical performance specification - it will not be used in the final detector Two options: K5 - mechanically almost identical to the K4, can use baseline mechanics design with minor mods KB - based on barrel hybrid, mechanically very different to K4, would need complete redesign of cooling circuitry. However, could still keep same support cylinder, wings, thermal enclosures and bare discs. Design presented for FDR is based on K4 CLRC
End-cap Mechanics FDR - Aims To review and approve the design of: Support cylinder, support wings, outer and inner thermal enclosure cylinders and discs To review the existing design and freeze interfaces to the above of: Disc inserts, disc fixings Cooling pipes and blocks Low mass power tape layout, opto fibre layout Patch panels PPF0 Alignment and DCS components and fixings CLRC
End-cap Mechanics FDR - Aims To review: Assembly procedures (mostly only conceptual at this stage) Grounding and shielding plan End-cap material distribution End-cap layout Interfaces to End-cap modules, SCT Barrel, End-cap TRT and Pixels CLRC
Post-FDR Plan Deal with any design concerns arising from review Freeze interface to support structures, thermal enclosures and discs. Complete detail design, manufacturing drawings and specifications Proceed to PRR and tender as soon as possible. Delay detail design and tender on all on-disc services until module status clear CLRC
