Figure Drawing Mrs. Fish Art 3

Proportion of a Figure Height: If the head (from the end of the chin to the crown) is taken as a unit of measurement, the body is about seven-and-a-half heads tall. There are three head lengths from the end of the spine to the base of the skull. Midpoint is at the top of legs. Feet and Hands: Feet and hands are surprisingly big. Feet are about a head long and hands are easily the same length as from the chin to the forehead. Arms and Legs: If the arms are hanging freely, the wrists are around mid-point and the fingertips mid-thigh. In women, the elbows are slightly above the waist. Shoulders: In a man, the shoulders are about two heads wide. Buttocks are about a head tall. Image: © Marion Boddy-Evans. Licensed to About.com, Inc

Construction of the Head Anatomy of the Head

Steps to Form Head Begin with a ball. Drop a line from mid-forehead to the chin. 'Slice off' a circle at the side of the head From the front of this circle, curve a line down to the chin. Complete the plane of the face with a line on the other side. Now add the jawline. Construct the nose, indicate mouth and chin position and elongate skull slightly. (The distance from chin to crown is almost the same as from forehead to the back of the skull).

Details/Tutorial

Rough ball indicating the main part of the skull. Draw the line from forehead to chin Form the plane of the face Add the jawline and main features. Note that the line indicating the nose shows the base of the nose, not the tip. This will help with modeling the nose later. http://drawsketch.about.com/library/weekly/aa121502a.htm

Construct the nose Jawline Indicate the brows, forehead and cheeks (depending on the pose). Position the eyes carefully. Position ears (eye to mouth)

Erase construction lines.                                                                                                  Erase construction lines. Improve the line work, checking the model constantly Adding detail and correcting shape. Add hair. Note that the drawing of the neck and shoulders must also be accurate. If you wish to shade your drawing, keep the line work light.
