Aims of the session: Enjoy maths and play around with numbers. Learn a little about how we teach maths across KS1. Learn how we teach: Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division

KS1 Practise Makes Permanent “The Principle focus of mathematics teaching in Key Stage 1 is to ensure that pupils develop confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value. This should involve working with numerals, words and the four operations, including with practical resources (for e.g. concrete objects and measuring tools). An emphasis on practice at this early stage will aid fluency.” DfE 2013

Maths in KS1 at Applecroft School Fun and something to be played with Relevant to everyday life and especially the children’s everyday life. Involves practical and oral/mental work as well as ‘traditional’ book work. Taught once a day for between 20 and 60 minutes. Contained within a 3 part lesson : Oral/mental starter Main activity Plenary Is supported by numerous additional sessions for booster and enhancement. Challenging.

What Maths do we teach in KS1? Number bonds from 10 and 20 ( ie 7+3=10, 18+2= 20) Place value ( units, tens and hundreds) Addition and subtraction to 100 Basic multiplication ( 2,5,10) Basic division ( dividing into 2, sharing into groups) Fractions ( ½ , ¼, 1/3 3/4) Time ( o’clock, half past, quarter to, quarter past) Measurement ( weight, length, capacity) Money ( everyday money- calculating change) Problem solving Handling data ( graphing, tables, sorting data) Shape and space Today we will focus on the red highlighted examples

Understanding number The ‘eightness’ of eight!

Place Value We use place value cards in combination with unifix cubes and 100 squares to recognize values of numbers. i.e. make the number 245 Step 1: separate the to its value 2 hundreds, 4 tens and 5 units Step 2: make that number with either cubes or a value card.

Oral and Mental Children are encouraged to develop mental strategies to solve calculations. Rapid recall of number facts (number bonds, times tables, doubling, halving) Big Maths carried out weekly Lets have a go!
