2 What do we teach in KS1 Maths? Place value (hundreds, tens and units/ones) Addition and subtraction Multiplication (2, 5, 10) Division Number bonds from 10 and 20 ( i.e. 7+3=10, 18+2=20) Time (o’clock, half past, quarter to, quarter past) Measurement (weight/mass, length, capacity) Money (everyday money- calculating change) Problem solving Handling data (graphing, tables, sorting data) Shape and space Today we will focus on the red highlighted examples

4 Place Value We use place value cards, and numicon or dienes to help understand the value of each digit in a number.

5 Addition - Year 1 Addition can be done in any order - use practical resources and numberlines to count on from the largest number to find a total. 5 + 2 = 7 _____________________________________ 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Use equipment and think about number facts e.g pairs of numbers to make 10. 8 + 4 = 12 +1 +2 8

6 Addition - Year 2 Use knowledge of place value to partition numbers into tens and units – using practical equipment and numberlines. 25 + 33= 58 Step 1 : partition numbers (tens 20 + 30) (units 5+3) Step 2 : add up the tens (20 + 30 = 50) Step 3 : add up the units/ones (5+ 3 = 8) Step 4 : add both Begin to use empty numberlines starting with the largest number and count on in tens and ones. 34 + 23 = 57 ___________________________________ 34 44 54 55 56 57 +10 +1

7 Subtraction - Year 1 Subtraction as taking away – children use moveable objects to physically take away and count the number of objects left. 8 – 3 = 5 Subtraction as counting back when subtracting small numbers. 8 – 3 = 5 Subtraction as finding the difference. _____________________________________ 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

9 Multiplication/Division –Year 1 Laying the foundations for multiplication and division by counting and looking for patterns. Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s using images and numberlines. Using the 100 square to look for patterns when counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

10 Multiplication – Year 2 As an array As repeated addition They will also learn to recite times tables alongside images. 2 x 6 = 12 6 x 2 = 12 5 × 3 = 5 + 5 + 5 3 x 5 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3

11 Division – Year 2 Division by sharing 6 shared equally between 2 groups. Division by grouping 6 divided into groups of 2
