What is Science?
What is Science? Science is the process of trying to understand the world.
Tools Used in Science Thermometers Meter sticks Computers Models Charts/Graphs Telescopes Microscopes ETC
When do we use Science? EVERY DAY!!!! ALL THE TIME!!!! For example, if you are trying to make a jump on a skateboard or trying to get the timing down for Guitar Hero, you are using science.
What do Scientists Use? Clues (5 senses, compare/contrast) Prior knowledge—things they already know, make predictions, and inferences Technology—The application of science to make products or tools that people can use

Using Models in Science Models allow scientists to represent things that happen too slowly, quickly, that are too big or small to observe directly. Models help to save time and money.
Scientific Measurement Scientists use the system of measurements called the International System of Units, or SI.
Experimental Research Design To make sure that an experiment is done right you should conduct multiple trials. This will help determine if a trial had errors or for some reason came out incorrectly.

Terms to Know Hypothesis Independent Variable Dependent Variable Control Constant
Terms to Know Hypothesis-a prediction that can be tested. Independent variable-the factor in the experiment that is changed. Dependent variable—the factor in the experiment that is being measured.
Terms to Know Constants—variables that stay the same. Control—a sample that is treated like the other experimental groups except that the independent variable is not changed.
Scientific Discoveries Lead to new products that influence our lives Helps to advance technology, which makes our lives easier Can be made by anyone
More Terms You Need to Know Observation—using your 5 senses to gather information. Inference—a conclusion about an observation (if you “observe” a fire truck, you can “infer” that there is a fire).
Archaeology—Study of cultural remains of ancient people. Artifacts are what archaeologists study (ex: pottery, jewelry, or tools found at a site).
Example of an experiment If you wanted to know how caffeine affected the heartbeat of fleas, you might have a control group that doesn’t get caffeine. The second group of fleas would get caffeine.
Each group of fleas received the same amount of food, water, and the room was the same temperature. One group, however, received caffeine five minutes before the heartbeats were checked, while the other group did not receive caffeine.
What is the Independent Variable? What is the Dependant Variable? What are two constants? Which group is the control?
