Learning Maths for Social Justice: Our project is about littering in the streets of London

The problem Litter is a very big problem across the world. It pollutes the air which causes holes in the ozone layer. If the ozone layer has too many holes than the rays of the sun will hit earth directly causing it to burn up. Every year around 28.5 million tones of waste is collected in England. Since the year 1955 over 10 million people have been dropping litter on the streets. ■ Over 51 billion pieces of litter land on London roadways each year. ■ Litter clean-up costs the London almost £11.5 billion each year, with businesses paying £9.1 billion. Governments, schools, and other organizations pick up the remainder. ■ Community economy and quality of life suffer. ■ Litter has environmental consequences. ■ The types of litter found most often include bottles, cans and fast food packaging, plastic shopping bags and cigarette butts.

Conclusion To solve this problem we could place more bins in London so there is more places to put litter. However there should be more street cleaners, to make the city cleaner. We also found out that you can get fined up to £2,000 for littering. 33% of litter is thrown away on the streets. This percentage should be lower.
