“Here Rests In Honored Glory An American Soldier Known But To God” The Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier “Here Rests In Honored Glory An American Soldier Known But To God”

What Is The Tomb? The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier is a memorial that stands as a reminder of all the soldiers who have fought and died for our country, many of whom were never identified. The tomb and its 3 crypts contain the remains of an Unknown Soldier from each of 3 major wars: World War I, World War II & the Korean War. The Vietnam War Soldier was exhumed May 14, 1998 for DNA testing. Based on mitochondrial DNA testing, DOD scientists identified the remains as those of Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Joseph Blassie, who was shot down near An Loc, Vietnam, in 1972. It has been decided that the crypt that contained the remains of the Vietnam Unknown will remain vacant.

Arlington Cemetery, Wahington d.c.

The Tomb has been Guarded by Sentinels on a 24 hour basis 7 days a week since 1937…

…Rain or shine, they stand guard & walk their post, honoring our fallen & unidentified.

Sentinel's Creed My dedication to this sacred duty is total and wholehearted. In their responsibility bestowed on me never will I falter. And with dignity and perseverance my standard will remain perfection. Through the years of diligence and praise and the discomfort of the elements, I will walk my tour in humble reverence to the best of my ability. It is he who commands the respect I protect. His bravery that made us so proud. "If any question why we died, Tell them, Because our fathers lied." - Kipling - 1918

The guarding is a ceremonious way of honoring our Unknown Soldiers The guarding is a ceremonious way of honoring our Unknown Soldiers. The movements are symbolic & executed with strict precision.

The highest honor given military or foreign dignitary The number 21 is alluding to the 21 gun salute

Countless soldiers have lost their lives fighting for this country and its virtues of freedom and opportunity in which they believe. "
