DSLR vs. point and shoot

Digital Cameras fall into two basic categories: DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) Point and Shoot

DSLR CAMERAS Higher quality photographs – larger image sensors More adaptability – interchangeable lenses, flashes, filters Faster Performance – faster shutter speeds More Manual Control – control over camera settings

Point and Shoot cameras More Affordable More Portable Easier to use

1 megapixel=1 million pixels. Megapixels Image sensor is made up of millions of pixels that react to and record light to capture a digital image. So big that they are called megapixels. 1 megapixel=1 million pixels.

Megapixels-How much is too much? Number of megapixels directly impacts resolution of the photos. The first digital cameras had 2 or 3 megapixels which was ok unless larger than a 4x6 print needed. Higher megapixel mean higher price. Now more megapixels mean bigger file sizes. If you don’t need large prints, you don’t need a high megapixel camera. Not much difference between a 3 or an 8 megapixel.

Types of zoom Optical Digital Lens moves to magnify your subject to make it appear closer. No impact on the resolution of the image. Digital Sensor crops the area around your subject and digitally enlarges the subject to fill the frame. To make the subject bigger, the camera interpolates (or make up) pixels based on the information in existing pixels and adds them to the image. The result can be fuzzy or distorted.

File types Default format is JPEG. Relatively small and widely accepted. They lose quality each time they are manipulated and saved. Images are processed inside the camera and determines all kinds of settings for color, light, saturation, etc. Some photographers prefer cameras that can save an image in raw file format.
