Karl Marx G.W.F. Hegel Industrial Revolution German philosopher Industrial Revolution Work and money ideas Grew up with anti- Jewish family Hegel believed in rational ideas being the driving force in history. Industrial revolution changed Marx’s ideas to materialism. Saw harsh conditions of miners and factory workers, wanted to change the pay of those who were not paid well enough for what they did.

The Communist Manifesto Four sections Written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels 1847 1848 Revolution First section: tells about the Communists’ ideas in history and the relationship between proletarians and the bourgeoisie. Second section: explains the relationship between the Communists’ and proletarians. Third section: addresses the flaws in the other, previous social literature. Fourth section: discusses the relationship between the Communists’ and the other parties. A proletariat is the lowest class in the economical scale of Europe. Mostly made up of “unskilled” laborers. A bourgeoisie is the middle class of Europe. Businessmen and property owners Communism is the economic and social system based on the ownership of land, factories, and other means of production by the community as a whole, or the state. Explains the thought of revolution being the only solution to end class divisions

Philosophy One: Hegel’s idea that history progresses through a necessary series of conflicts. Two: Materialism, which maintains that the physical world accounts for everything real. Three: Socialism and its emphasis on public ownership of property used for economic production. Four: The capitalist idea that the market forces determine economic activity. One: Societies have to go through revolutions or wars Two: All things that you can tough are the only things that exist Three: Public land should be used for business and factories. Four: The stock market determines how well the economy is going.

Marxism Marxism: The theory of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, who interpreted history as a continuing struggle between the interests of conflicting economic groups, resulting in a classless society and a communal ownership of all property. (dictionary definition) The theory is that the social classes will clash or have a revolution so that there will not be any more classes and everyone will own the land. Turn into factories because of the idea that communal land will turn into places of business and factories.

Economic System A way of managing money and property. The communistic way of handling money. Marxism was implemented when the Soviet Union started in 1922 under V.I. Lenin (a communist society) Bolsheviks or communists

Society No Private Property Money and Work Red and White armies 1917 The idea that everyone was paid the same amount of money for working. Led to the problems of some people working longer than others but still getting paid the same amount of money. Red Army= communist White Army= anti- communist Two armies in the Russian Civil War
