MATCH PLAY - INDIVIDUAL

What is the Match Play? Match Play is the second stage of a championship; It consists of two further stages - Elimination Round & Finals Round In both the rounds, archers compete against one another, head to head, according to a seeding chart and the winner of a match proceeds to the next round For Recurve, the Olympic Round is shot at the 70m distance on 122cm faces, following the “set system” – max. 5 sets of 3 arrows For Compound, the Compound Round is shot at 50m on 80cm 6 ring targets, using “cumulative scoring” with 5 ends of 3 arrows

What is the Match Play – difference from qualification No extra time for equipment failure or unexpected medical problems In Match Play arrows rebounding, passing through the butt or hanging from it will not stop the competition At the end of the match, athletes or their agents must sign the score card. By doing so, they indicate that they agree on the sum total, the number of X’s and 10’s and who is the winner

Match Play – Elimination Round Elimination Round: 104 athletes (World Championships) 64 Athletes (Olympics) seeded according to their position in the Qualification Round In case of a tie for the entrance to the elimination round – one arrow shoot off Byes are permitted During match play, the position of archers on the shooting line will follow the match –play chart as shown in Book 2 of C&R

Match Play – Elimination Round During the recurve elimination round, archers shoot simultaneously 5 sets of 3 arrows (2 minutes/set) – with the athlete scoring ≥ 6 set points becoming the winner Whilst in the compound division, archers shoot simultaneously 5 ends of 3 arrows (2 minutes/end) for cumulative score – athlete with higher score winning the match

Match Play – Elimination Round During the 1/48th, 1/32nd and 1/16th Elimination rounds there may be two athletes per target butt During the 1/8th Elimination Round, athletes will shoot on separate target butts. (World Championships) Archers with byes or archers who have a forfeited match will advance to the next round of elimination. They can still practice at their assigned targets, shooting Only the first 3 sets of 3 arrows in case of recurve All 5 ends of 3 arrows for compound

Match Play – Elimination Round Timing signals will be given: 2 beeps: proceed to shooting line 1 beep: start shooting 3 beeps: proceed to scoring 10 sec 120 sec Athletes will go to the target butts to participate in scoring and in the collection of arrows.

Match Play – Finals Round & Medals Matches During the Quarter Finals, Semi-Finals and the Medals matches :- Alternate shooting will be used, one athlete per target butt Twenty (20) Seconds is the time allowed to shoot one arrow The higher ranked archer in qualification round decides the order of shooting The position of the archers on the shooting line will follow the positions indicated in the match play charts Athletes do not participate in scoring; they must appoint an agent to observe the scoring, to withdraw the arrows and to mark the arrow holes

Match Play – Finals Round & Medals Matches Recurve division – 5 sets of 3 arrows, archer getting ≥ 6 set points wins Athlete with lower cumulative set score shoots first the next end Compound division – 5 ends of 3 arrows, archer with higher cumulative score wins Athlete with lower cumulative score shoots first the next end In both divisions, if athletes are tied, the athlete who shot first in the first end, shoots first – also in case of a shoot-off

Match Play – Finals Round & Medals Matches Timing signals will be given to athletes to proceed to the shooting line ( 2 beeps), 10 seconds later; start shooting (one beep) The first twenty (20) second period for the first athlete commences, as soon as the first athlete has shot his/her arrow and the score has been posted, the countdown clock for the second archer is started to indicate his/her 20 second period. The athletes continue to alternate their shots following the countdown clock’s visual signal until each athlete has shot his/her three arrows.

Match Play – Shoot-off Shoot-offs Elimination Round :- One Arrow shoot off for score, if tied then closest to centre wins Forty Seconds (40) is the time allowed Both archers shoots simultaneously Shoot-offs Finals Round :- One Arrow shoot off for score, if tied then closest to centre wins Twenty Seconds (20) is the time allowed Archers alternate, i.e., shoots one at a time

Match Play – Shoot-off During a shoot-off (elimination and finals rounds), in the event of a tie, another shoot-off will take place. Successive shoot-offs will take place till a winner can be declared.

Match Play – Equipment In the Match Play Elimination Round, a flip score device to show the set score will be placed below each butt Blinds are to be provided for the finals round, they will be used by judges, scorers, arrow runners and athletes agents
