“To see takes time, like to have a friend takes time.” Hickory Leaves Daisy Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) “To see takes time, like to have a friend takes time.” ~Georgia O’Keeffe

Born to a Wisconsin farming family in 1887. Knew from a young age that she wanted to be an artist: “After we are through school, I am going to give up everything for my art. I am going to live a different kind of life from the rest of you girls.” Georgia O’Keeffe 1918

Remembered patterns on a quilt she saw before she was a year old. Didn’t care about rules of dress for women and dressed in plain, loose clothes with her hair tied back in a braid. Often made her own clothes and lived simply.

In high school a teacher encouraged her to examine a flower closely before drawing it. She found in the flower a world to be explored. “When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else.”

She went to art school, worked as commercial artist, taught… Sunset Over Long Island She went to art school, worked as commercial artist, taught… She gained fame when a friend shared her work with a photographer (he later became her husband). She didn’t like people to call her a famous “woman” artist. She felt she was just a famous artist.

She bought her house in New Mexico for $10. It had been used as a pigsty but was really a Spanish colonial ruin.

Georgia drew cartoons of her teachers for her high school yearbook. She won the U.S. Medal of Freedom. She didn’t sign her paintings. She loved to roller-skate. When she was too old to skate by herself, her assistant would roller-skate her around the gym on his back. She painted over 900 paintings. Did you know?

Her Style: Unique view Fills space Startling-- small becomes large

Many of her paintings have flower subjects. She also liked to paint shells.

She also painted pictures of the New Mexico landscape or items found in the desert.
