Defining Namespaces Challenges with Internet Namespaces Jonne Soininen EE DNS Forum, Minsk 2017 12 October 2017

Internet has multiple namespaces Internet Namespaces Multiple name spaces exist DNS based Non-DNS based Global Private Technically these are different Different technology Different scope They do look very similar! Internet has multiple namespaces 2

The DNS is a big part of the Internet namespace Domain Name System Global DNS Namespace Global Organized Hierarchical Globally unique “.” TLD X TLD Y TLD Z The DNS is a big part of the Internet namespace 3

Special-Use Names are a different namespace from the DNS Registry managed by the IETF RFC2606, RFC6761 Used for special/technical use Protocols different from the DNS Not in DNS root IETF is revising its process Special-Use names problem statement: draft-ietf-dnsop-sutld-ps Current special-use names: Example, example.com, example.net, example.org Invalid Local Localhost Onion test Special-Use Names are a different namespace from the DNS 4

Private namespaces are common especially in company networks Private DNS Local DNS Namespace Local within an organization Uses the DNS protocol Looks exactly like global DNS CORP X Y Z Private namespaces are common especially in company networks 5

Namespace issues Technical Collisions Resolution method ambiguity Non-technical End-user confusion Ownership of namespaces Overlapping allocations Namespace management DNS root: ICANN Special use names: IETF Private: The organization, vendor, etc. using the namespace Security and Stability Advisory Committee statement SSAC Advisory on the Stability of the Domain Namespace (SSAC090) Corp Home Mail Lan Belkin 6

Cooperation is key for solving namespace challenges Winning the Challenge Coordination Especially, between ICANN and IETF Education How to contain collisions New names coming to the root Technical Potential new technologies Policy Not delegating strings when in risk Cooperation is key for solving namespace challenges 7
