Academic Support Tuition – Phase 2 Phase 2 of the Academic Support Tuition project seeks to Implement a monitoring mechanism Provide training for staff and ‘expectation setting’ for students Provide guidance and resources to help academic areas implement AST Refine the AST policy to make it workable in practice Due to finish July 2016 but likely to take longer

Action plans from pilot revealed that students Monitoring Monitoring Performed through Staff Student Committee using adapted version of NUS benchmarking tools Staff and student reps independently benchmark provision Staff student committee Receives benchmarking reports Produces and monitors an Action Plan Benchmark has been piloted in 3 departments and is being refined ready for 2016/17 session rollout Action plans from pilot revealed that students Don’t like the AST name Want AST sessions to be compulsory and timetabled Misunderstand, or aren’t supported, in the action planning aspects of AST

Least developed aspect of the project to date Training Least developed aspect of the project to date Key focus of activity for next few months Training will be online and provided through Canvas Tutor training will include The wider context of AST and why it is important to be an effective, caring tutor Detailed practical guidance for tutors Links to live service map for up to date referrals information Interactive guidance for a range of issues Student ‘training’ will Set expectations of AST and value of participating Would like to introduce senior AST’s in each area to Mentor and train AST’s Assist with difficult issues Monitor and enhance AST provision Spread effective practice across the institution

AST Curriculum Suggested AST programme of activities supported by resources Based on supporting transition – activities focused on Certificate stage

AST Curriculum – Session Schedule More sessions in L4 to support transition into university study Decreasing number of group session as students progress through the course Room for disciplinary skills content Easier to schedule into available rooms
