What are the rights? There are 54 articles (rights) in the convention. Article 1 Everyone under 18 years of age has all the rights in this Convention. Article 42 Governments should make the convention known to children and adults.

Article 12 – focus on 8th March Children have the right to say what they think should happen, when adults are making decisions that affect them, and to have their opinions taken into account. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOksW_NabEk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBQN4bgdh14 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbvIpIeO4fU

The rights to liberty of opinion, expression and association of the children Children have the right, as do the adults, to have an opinion, to express it and to meet in order to share their point of view. Liberty of opinion Children have the right to have an opinion different from their parents. While taking into account their age, as well as their degree of maturity and discernment, children have the right to have their opinion considered. States, communities and parents have the duty to listen to the children and to consider their opinions when the decisions concern them.

Liberty of expression Every child has the right to express freely their opinion on all the questions which concern his/her life. So a child should not be the victim of the pressure of an adult, who would try to force him/her in order to influence them in their opinion or who would prevent them from expressing themselves freely. The freedom of expression for the children also involves their right to be informed. It is the right of the children to know what happens and to access information which interests them. Then children can comprehend current problems, inquire and build up their own opinion on topical subjects.

Article 19 Governments should ensure that children are protected from all forms of violence, abuse and neglect by their parents or anyone else who looks after them.

Article 24 Children have the right to the best possible health, and to clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment so that they will stay healthy. Rich countries should help poorer countries achieve this.

Article 28 Children have a right to an education. Discipline in schools should respect children’s human dignity. Primary education should be free. Wealthy countries should help poorer countries achieve this.

Article 31 All children have a right to relax and play, and to join a wide range of activities.

Unicef – The Rights These rights describe what a child needs to survive, grow, and live up to their potential in the world. They apply equally to every child, no matter who they are or where they come from. All children have rights, even those affected by conflict or emergencies.

We will begin our journey towards becoming a Rights Respecting School The Rights at Tregolls We will begin our journey towards becoming a Rights Respecting School

What is a Rights Respecting School? A Rights Respecting School puts the CRC (Convention on the Rights of the Child) at the heart of a school’s culture and ethos to improve well-being and develop every child’s talents and abilities to their fullest potential

Link with our new values Respect Honesty Kindness & Compassion Equality Fairness Generosity Integrity Courage Determination Politeness Loyalty Friendship Commitment Empathy Acceptance Co-operation Hope Excellence Responsibility Patience Love Trust

Why do you need to know? All children have these rights and we have to respect them. There are no conditions attached to them. They cannot be taken away. Children are the “rights holders” and adults are the “duty bearers”. The language we use around children is very important – we have to model the right language.
