Other Relationships in Ecosystems

Warm Up An organism that performs photosynthesis is called: A. a decomposer B. a consumer C. an autotroph D. a heterotroph

Quiz Word bank: energy, food chain, food web, autotrophs, heterotrophs

Competition Competition occurs when organisms try to get the same resources (food, shelter, water, sunlight, living space) Can take place between members of the same population or a different population

Coexisting Coexist – organisms live in the same habitat but rely on different resources Cooperation- helpful interaction among organisms living in a limited area

Interactions involving food Predation- one animal hunts, kills and eats another Predator- the animal that hunts and kills other animals Prey- the animals that are hunted and eaten Predator-prey relationship helps keep a balance

Symbiosis Symbiosis- a close relationship between two different species living together Mutualism- both species benefit Commensalism- one species benefits while the other is not affected negatively or positively Parasitism- one species benefits but other species is harmed Parasite- lives in or on another organism Host- the organism that the parasite lives in or on

Mutualism

Commensalism

Parasitism
