The Four Marks Of The Church “One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church”

One The church is described as one because the Church has: John 17:21 One Source- The Holy Trinity One Founder- Jesus Christ One Soul- The Holy Spirit John 17:21

Holy The Church is described as holy because of its union with Christ. The church offers its members sanctification Sanctification – growing in divine grace. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17

Catholic The Church is described as Catholic because: Christ is present in the Church The Church is open to all peoples of the world. The definition of the word catholic is: Including or concerning all of humankind Synonym: universal As Catholics, we respect other religions and pray for the reunion of the Christians Churches throughout the world (ecumenism) Matthew 28:19

Apostolic The Church is described as Apostolic because we work to have a connection with the Apostles who founded it in three ways. By remaining in communion with the apostles and sharing the mission given to them by Christ By keeping and handing on the apostles’ teachings with the help of the Holy Spirit. By being taught, sanctified and guided by the successors to the apostles Priests and Bishops in union with the Pope. Ephesians 2:20

Christian Living We learn that, on top of obeying the laws of God, we should also be strengthening the representations of the marks of the Church. We can live out our duties by doing the following: Assist at Mass on Sundays and other days of obligation. Go to confession at least once a year. Receive Holy Communion at least once a year during Easter time. Keep Holy the Lord’s days. Fast and abstain from certain behaviors where relevant.
