Hebrews 11:4 (NASB) 4  By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained the testimony that he was righteous, God testifying about his gifts, and through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks.

A sacrifice appropriated by faith – Hebrews 11:4 There was a definite place where God was to be worshipped – Genesis 4:3; 4:16. There was an appointed time of worship – perhaps the Sabbath day. There was a prescribed means of worship.

Tale of Two Brothers Genesis 4:1-10 The Natural Man – Cain Cain worshipped after his own fashion. His sacrifice was bloodless. His sacrifice was a result of his own toil, the works of his own hands. Cain’s sacrifice came from the very ground that God had cursed – Genesis 3:17. God had no respect for Cain’s sacrifice. But God allowed room for Cain to change.

Tale of Two Brothers Genesis 4:1-10 The Spiritual Man – Abel Abel offered the prescribed sacrifice. There was the giving of life as a substitute. The sacrifice was Abel’s best. God saw it as pleasing. God had respect for Abel’s sacrifice. The sacrifice was a burnt offering – Job 1:5.

Job 1:5 (NASB) 5  When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.

1 Corinthians 10:1-13 (NASB) 1  For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; 2  and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3  and all ate the same spiritual food; 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.

6  Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. 7  Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to play.” 8  Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day. 9  Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents. 10  Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

11  Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12  Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 13  No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

He did not die a natural death. He met with a violent end at the hand of his brother. Abel’s blood cried out to God.
