Read Write Inc. Phonics

Aims To share what Read Write Inc phonics is and who it is for. To learn the sounds and graphemes that are taught during the Read Write Inc phonics programme. To share how we use Read Write Inc to teach reading and spelling. To share ideas about how parents and carers can help their child at home.

What is phonics and who is it for?

+ Phonics is all about using… knowledge of the alphabet skills for reading and spelling + Learning phonics will help your child to become a good reader and writer.

Phonics at Lambton Phonics begins in nursery and throughout KS1. At Lambton, we use a scheme called Read Write Inc. which uses a systematic approach. Systematic phonics is a method of teaching reading through the identification of sounds and graphemes.

All words are made up of sounds/phonemes, e. g All words are made up of sounds/phonemes, e.g. in the word ‘cat’ we hear the sounds/phonemes ‘c’-’a’-’t’ A phoneme you hear

A grapheme is the written representation of a phoneme (a grapheme is written down). It is a letter or group of letters representing a sound. A grapheme you see

How the systematic approach is taught

How phonics is taught at Lambton

Phase 1: Nursery Getting ready for phonics Phase 1 phonics begins in nursery. A slightly different scheme is followed, which is called ‘Phase 1 - Letters and Sounds’. Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds concentrates on developing children's speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations. The emphasis during Phase 1 is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills Environmental sounds Instrumental sounds Body percussion Rhythm and Rhyme Alliteration Oral blending and segmenting

Sound pronunciation To support with reading in phonics, we use what we call ‘pure sounds’. Children need to know the letter sounds - not the letter names - so that they can blend them together in order to read.

1: Pure sounds

2: blending to read Once the children know the pure sounds, we teach them to blend sounds to read words. We use Fred Talk to help children sound out and read words. mat sad sat

3: writing We use Fred Fingers to help children sound out words and spell easily.

How can I help at home? Nursery- Phonics play www.phonicsplay.co.uk- phase 1. Games to support environmental sounds. Nursery rhymes. Read to your children- ask questions and share opinions Talk to your child- feed them with new and ambitious vocabulary Support with recognising and saying the pure sounds, using Fred talk when they are reading and Fred fingers when they are spelling.

Phonics screening At the end of Year 1, the children will take the statutory National Phonic Screening Test. This will take place in June. Practice tests from the Year 1 teacher will be sent home to pratise. If children are still working towards the phonic test by the end of Year 1 then they will work in small intervention groups to enable them to retake the test in Year 2.
