Augustin-Louis Cauchy The inventor of Infinitesimals and the Theory of Substitution Groups. his most important contribution to mathematics was complex analysis.

Basic Facts Born: August 21st, 1789 Birthplace: Paris, France Died: May 23rd, 1857 (68 yrs.) Location of death: Sceaux, France Cause of death: Illness Nationality: French Religion: Roman Catholic

Education He went to college and became an engineer. University: École Centrale du Panthéon University: École Polytechnique, Paris (1805-) University: École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (1807-) Gave up engineering to study mathematics. Algebra Analysis Number Theory Topology Astronomy First mathematician to try and make math rigorous.

Teachings  Professor :  Collège de France, Paris  École Polytechnique, Paris University of Turin Cauchy recieved so much praise for his lectures he chose to publish them into 3 books: Cours d'Analyse de l'École Polytechnique (1821, mathematics) Le Calcul Infinitésimal (1823, mathematics) Leçons sur les Applications de Calcul Infinitésimal; La Géométrie (1826–28, mathematics) Plus Oeuvres complètes d'Augustin Cauchy (1882–1970) which has 27 volumes. Published works in the Académie’s weekly bulletin, the Comptes Rendu

His Contribution to Mathematics Peano existence theorem Cauchy–Kovalevskaya theorem  Residue Theorem Cauchy’s Equation Cauchy’s Integral Formula Cauchy’s Integral Theorem Cauchy’s Mean Value Theorem

Interesting Facts Augustin was taught by his father during his childhood. Augustin’s father, Louis François Cauchy, was friends with Joesph-Louis Lagrange and Pierre-Simon Laplace, two other famous mathematicians. It was Lagrange and Laplace who encouraged Augustin the most to study mathematics. His name was found in most calculus textbooks during his time. He wrote more mathematic works than any other mathematician, except for Leonhard Euler. He was given the privilege to teach King Charles X’s grandson.
