Multimedia Hypermedia What is It, How Do I Use It? Karen Kreitzburg LIB 5050 Dr. R. Sanders

Understanding the following terms is essential to assisting your schools integration into the new millennium. Hyperlink: A direct path from a source document, image, etc., to another object in a destination document. Hypermedia: A combination of hypertext and multimedia elements such as graphic, images, audio and video used in conjunction with computers’ technology. Hypertext: The text which contains connections (called hyperlinks, hot words or hot links) to other documents. (to open hyperlink, double click, close window after viewing and you will return to this power point)

Multimedia: A term referring to the combination of music, video, text, and images.

How is multimedia useful? Textbooks are expensive and heavy Many textbook companies are including power point presentations and CD-ROMs for students Multimedia allows the author to include far more documents and resources. Also allows for the addition of audio, video, and multiple links to additional information.

Multimedia combines: storing and retrieving technology with tools for viewing and/or manipulating data The reader becomes the “captain” of the multimedia journey.

What are some ways the media coordinator can use multimedia and hypermedia? Stations in the media center have instructions for using various resources in a flip book next to the system. Include web sites with easy instructions in your newsletters. Provide software such as Encarta, Orchard, Skills Bank, etc.

Assist teachers in preparing a multimedia presentation for class –- this addresses learning styles of students. Assist teachers in providing instruction to classes on how to navigate the Internet.
