Off the Georgia Coast Off the coast of Georgia are the Barrier Islands. They are also called “The Golden Isles”.

“Golden Isle” Trivia Cumberland Island is known for its wild horses. Ancient Indians named Tybee Island “Salt”. Ossabaw was named by the Creek and Muscogean Indians for the leaves of a yaupon holly that would induce vomiting. Spanish Explorers were the first to claim Jekyll Island in 1510 and called it “Whale Island”.
