Fanfare 3 Year 10 Composition

To learn some ways to build tension in a composition Learning Objectives To learn some ways to build tension in a composition To understand what modes are and how to use them in a composition To think of some ways to build tension in a piece of music

Prep review Compose a duet for two trumpets Choose 5 or 6 pitches only and use them in your duet. Start with only one or two pitches You should include: Long and short notes Additive melodies Melodies which add more notes as they develop Antiphony Hints The best compositions use some melodic development. How could you develop your musical material? Like your minimalist compositions, less is more! Use two or three simple rhythmic ideas and see if you can develop them and extend them

Prep Peer Assessment Does it use two trumpets? Does it use 5 or 6 pitches? Does it start with just 1 or 2 and gradually add more pitches? Does it include a range of different note lengths? Is there antiphony? Write two things you like musically about it Write one thing you think would improve it

Modes A mode is a type of scale with a particular sequence of intervals to give it a distinctive melodic character Different modes have a different character semitone semitone tone tone tone tone tone

Building tension Think of at least 4 ways to build tension in music In pairs create a list of at least 6 ways to build tension Share your list with the class

Using a mode Create a mode with 5 or 6 notes The melody should use exclusively these notes to start with Using notes from your mode, Create 2 or 3 chords you like the sound of Create 2 or 3 four-quaver melodic patterns which outline each chord
