3 Learning Objectives ▪ To plan the structure of your fanfare ▪ To learn how to write timpani parts ▪ To write parts to play the chords and patterns you wrote last week

4 Prep review: Using a mode ▪ Create a mode with 5 or 6 notes ▪ The melody should use exclusively these notes to start with ▪ Using notes from your mode, – Create 2 or 3 chords you like the sound of – Create 2 or 3 four-quaver melodic patterns which outline each chord

5 Writing for timpani ▪ Usually only 2 ▪ Use only the tonic and the dominant ▪ In C major this means C and G ▪ Write in the bass clef ▪ For a roll, use a trill (press L)

6 Plan ▪ The order of chords to harmonise your trumpet duet ▪ Which instruments will play long notes from the chords? ▪ Which instruments will play ostinato patterns? ▪ How will you build tension to reach the climax?
