2. What is Music Theory?
Music theory is the study of how music works. To understand music theory, we are looking at the relationships between notes.

3. Relationship between Notes
The distance between notes (intervals)
The sound of notes being played together (harmony)
Voicing of notes from left to right (melody)
The timing of notes between each other (rhythm)

4. Intervals
Is the distance between pitches. Intervals can be harmonic (up and down) or melodic (left to right).

5. Harmony
Harmony is the relationships between notes being played at the same time. Harmony is often illustrated in terms of chords.

6. Melody
Melody is read from left to right and is usually the top line in a piece of music.

7. Keys and Key Signatures
A key tells you what notes commonly occur in a piece of music. Keys have a number of sharps or flats (not both).
A key signature is the visual marking at the beginning of the piece that tell you what notes are sharped or flatted.

8. Scales
A scale is when you put all of the notes in a key starting from the tonic to tonic and all key notes in between.

9. A chord is when you play 2 or more notes at the same time.
Chords
A chord is when you play 2 or more notes at the same time.
A triad is a chord with 3 notes: There are major, minor, diminished and augmented triads. Sometimes one of the notes (the fifth) is omitted which will result in a 2 note chord.
There are many other types of chords including 7ths, extended chords, suspended chords and more.

10. Building Chords on a Scale
You can build chords on each note of a scale by evenly spacing notes in 3rds. Since there are 7 individual notes in a scale, there are 7 individual chords that exist in a key.

11. Chord Progressions
A chord progression is a pattern of chords used in a piece of music. You can take the chords we built and make a pattern out of them. The most common chord progression are the primary chords I, IV, V
