The Proper Pattern of Prayer, Pt. 1 Matthew 6:9-10 The Proper Purpose of Prayer is to talk with God – not to impress men (Mt. 6:5-6) The Proper Practice of Prayer is to seek God’s will confident He hears & answers – (Matt. 6:7-8)

The Proper Pattern for Prayer Matthew 6:9-13 Who we are praying to The proper subjects of prayer All aspects of time

“The Proper Pattern of Prayer” Matthew 6:9 “Our Father” Defines our relationship with God Who art in Heaven This differentiates God from man - Numbers 23:19 God is not limited in resources, ability or wisdom

Hallowed be Thy Name Matthew 6:9 “This is the passion of prayer and sets its tone To “Hallow” = make holy; sanctify. We approach God with reverence

“Hallowed Be Thy Name” Matthew 6:9 Believe God exists – Hebrews 11:6 Believe what God has revealed about Himself in the Scriptures – cf. Rom. 1 Speak of God with reverence – Prov. 1:7; Exodus 20:7 Have godly behavior – Matt. 5:16

“Thy Kingdom Come” Matthew 6:10 Desire for the establishment of the promised kingdom – 2 Sam. 7:12; Isaiah 9:6-7, etc. Desire for Jesus to reign here & now This is a pledge of our allegiance to our king and to follow Him now.

Thy will be Done Matthew 6:10 This is the focus of prayer for the true Christian Matt. 21:22; cf. James 4:3; 1 Jn 5:14-15 Selfishness blocks proper prayer Many resent not getting what they want

Thy will be Done Matthew 6:10 Some pray this in defiant surrender Some pray this in passive resignation Some pray this in fatalism We pray this with hope – James 5:13-18 We pray this as Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane – Matthew 26

Thy will be Done Matthew 6:10 We pray Thy will be done with passion in rebellion against sin with humility in submission to the Father

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread Matthew 6:11 “Bread” = daily provisions for life James 1:17 We must work hard, but it is the Lord that provides what we need Psalm 37:16-20

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread Matthew 6:11 God meets our needs through: Our own labor (Gen. 3:19 cf. 1 Tim. 5:8 & 2 Thess. 3:10) His people & own sovereign methods

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread Matthew 6:11 This is for daily bread, not stocked cupboards It is a command (cf. 1 Tim. 4:3-5)

And Forgives Us Our Debts Matthew 6:12 Psychology redefines sin, but nevertheless it is still sin. Sin is serious for it puts man under God’s condemnation (cf. Romans 1:18f) Only in Jesus Christ is their forgiveness of sin (Rom. 8:1; Ps. 103:13; 2 Cor. 7:9-10)

And Forgives Us Our Debts Matthew 6:12 1 John 1:9; cf. Psalm 66:18 Matthew 18:21-35 James 2:13 Bitterness & resentment are indicators of unforgiveness

And Lead Us Not into Temptation Matthew 6:13 “temptation” (πειρασμος / peirasmos) can mean either “a solicitation to evil” or “a testing” depending on context God does not solicit to evil - James 1:13 1 Corinthians 10:13 John 17:5

Benediction 1 Chronicles 29:11 Thine, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Thine is the dominion, O Lord, and Thou dost exalt Thyself as head over all. 1 Chronicles 29:11
