What is Global Citizenship? Section 1 – 1.1 What is Global Citizenship? Based on information provided by Oxfam GB: www.oxfam.org.uk/education. Photos Oxfam Italia

Global Citizenship Global citizenship is a way of thinking and living that recognises how our choices and actions affect people and communities locally, nationally and around the world. Ref: adapted from IDEAS for Global Citizenship

Shared responsibilities Global Citizenship Interconnectedness Shared responsibilities Equal rights Global Citizenship has three main elements Our lives are interconnected with the lives of other people all around the world. No matter where we live or what we do, every human being has equal rights. We have a shared responsibility to speak up and make the world better for all its inhabitants.

What is global citizenship about in practice? Here are some key words.

What is a Global Citizen? How would you recognise a Global Citizen if you met one? We asked a lot of people and here are the answers they came up with. Most of them come under three headings: A Global Citizen has knowledge. A Global Citizen learns new skills. A Global Citizen demonstrates values and attitudes.

What is a global citizen and what do global citizens do? Watch the UNESCO Video ‘What is a Global Citizen’ (3’28’’): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVSgbU6WVSk. Do you agree with the answers? This image is a screenshot of the UNESCO Video ’What is a Global Citizen’ accessed on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVSgbU6WVSk

You can break Global Citizenship down into three stages Doing global citizenship You can break Global Citizenship down into three stages Learn Think Act You can break Global Citizenship down into three stages. Learn: understand the world and how it is changing better. Think: plan to do something that will help make a difference Act: do something, big or small, that helps to make a difference in the world

Global Issues

Global Issues Opportunities Challenges

Better health & education Opportunities Challenges Renewable energy Gender inequality Climate change Online communication Global Issues Extreme poverty Better health & education Inequality Spread of democracy Can you think of more examples? Very often the opportunities provide solutions to the challenges

Oxfam video about general global issues Watch the Oxfam video about general global issues (0’41’’): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQK6ODxDfDY Do you think the video highlights the correct global issues? If you were making the video what different issues would you highlight?

How to do Global Citizenship? There’s no right or wrong way of doing global citizenship. One of the exciting things about being a Global Citizen is that you get to decide what works best for you! Here are some examples of what young people around Europe have done.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 goals agreed at the United Nations and aimed at ending global poverty. The governments and citizens of the world will work together towards making the SDGs a success.

Here are the SDGs More information on the Sustainable Development Goals can be found on their website: https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdgs Image: http://www.un.org.me/uploads/images/SDGs.png

How do you do Global Citizenship? Don’t stop at the learning, think about how to do something as responsible global citizens and take action!

Learn Think Act Find and understand information about global issues. Make informed decisions about how to use the information to take action. Act Do something to help make a difference by putting your ideas into action.

Learn ‘In order to change the world, you have to get your head together first.’ Jimi Hendrix You can do it in a classroom, you can do it in a library, you can do it on the internet, you can do it with friends. Begin by learning; you need to understand the issues first. Image: GCE UK

Think ‘The world as we have created is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.’ Albert Einstein Once you know what you are talking about….. Discuss, debate, collaborate, cooperate, challenge, organise and plan. Do some thinking! Image: Oxfam GB

Act ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.’ Margaret Mead Once you understand the issues and you’ve planned what to do, act. Here young people in the UK meet their Member of Parliament and hand over letters they have written. Image: Oxfam GB

Why do you do Global Citizenship?

Why do Global Citizenship? National Local Citizenship The world is an interconnected place “Before you finish eating breakfast this morning, you've depended on more than half the world.” Martin Luther King Global is Local The world is an interconnected place, where our decisions and actions can affect the lives of other people living somewhere else in the world, and their decisions and actions can affect us.

What are benefits of Global Citizenship for you Personal Development Employment Skills Learning Skills Understanding politics Building empathy for others Standing up for what you believe Building your confidence Helping to make the world fairer and better Finding new solutions for problems Communicating ideas clearly and confidently Being well organised and taking responsibility Playing an effective role in a team Having a deeper knowledge of the world Making judgments and reaching thoughtful decisions Being able to communicate ideas clearly and persuasively

How Global Citizenship helps the world to be fairer and more sustainable A Global Citizen aims to understand global issues at the local, national and global levels A Global Citizen takes action to influence others to be more aware of global issues and helps to make a difference.
