What is the KKK? The Ku Klux Klan, also known as the KKK, was a white supremacist secret society that was founded in 1866 by 6 veterans of the Confederate Army. Throughout history, the group used many acts of terrorism including murder, arson, rape, and bombings against the African American community.

History Many members of the Klan lived in quiet rural areas so the Klan adopted masks and robes to hide their identity, since everyone knew each other in these small towns. The outfits added drama to their attacks especially because they attacked at night. Members would break into houses owned by African Americans and started fires while the victims were still inside. Their attacks included burning crosses on the lawns of individuals and riding in groups by horseback near communities they wanted to intimidate.

Outfits Some of the most recognizable Klan symbols date back to the group’s origins following the Civil War. The well-known white hoods and robes evolved from early efforts to pose as ghosts or “spectral” figures, that they used as "pranks" to draw upon the African-American folklore and beliefs.

Famous People Involved President William McKinley (25th president of the United States) was a member at one point West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd joined the KKK in the 1940s at the age of 24.

Impact Despite the fact that the Klan has not been able to leave foot hold in modern day times they're present is still felt. Countries in which the Klan was active during the civil rights era have been proven to have higher violent crime rates.

Modern Day KKK The number of people who are apart of the KKK have considerably downsized. As the number use to be in the millions have now decreased to about 5,000 to 8,000. Many would think these remaining members would reside in the Deep South like Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina but, many are also from liberal bastions of New York, New Jersey and Illinois.
